Come to Buchanan's Service Center to Replace Your Car's Receiver and Dryer or Accumulator

Your car's compressor is designed to take in air only. Moisture infiltration is an issue for vehicles in the Omaha area. Water getting into the compressor is a common cause for compressor failure. Your car or truck has either a receiver and dryer or an accumulator to separate air from water to keep the compressor dry.

  • A receiver and dryer are present in vehicles that have a thermal expansion valve.
  • An accumulator is present in a vehicle with an orifice tube. The accumulator is responsible for monitoring and controlling the amount of refrigerant that goes into the evaporator.

The receiver and dryer or accumulator also removes moisture using a desiccant, which is a small, bead-filled packet, and special filters that protect the A/C system from moisture and are easy to replace.

Your vehicle's AC condenser is usually located in the front of the radiator. When your AC compressor is pressurizing the refrigerant flows to the condenser to reduce the temperature and pressure. The condenser is a vital component in keeping your car's cabin temperature cool. It moves the cooled liquid refrigerant to the receiver/dryer or accumulator.

Freon Recharging FAQs

How often should Freon be changed?

Never, at least not in the way you think of your oil being changed. Your car's AC system is a sealed unit. No new Freon needs to be added unless there's a refrigerant leak. Over time, as your vehicle ages, small cracks may form in AC system components such as the compressor, condenser, evaporator, receiver-dryer, expansion tube, and connecting hoses, allowing Freon to escape. If this occurs, the failing component should be replaced and the system recharged.

How long should a Freon recharge last?

If your car's AC system was recently repaired and required a Freon recharge, it should not need to be recharged again under normal circumstances. Your AC system is a sealed system that does not allow refrigerant to escape. Freon is not like gasoline and does not get used up. If Freon continues to leak after repairs have been completed, additional diagnostic work may be needed to locate and repair the leak.

How many cans of Freon does a car take?

Don't guesstimate your vehicle's refrigerant needs. Most cars use between 28 and 32 ounces of refrigerant, which is roughly equal to two or three 12-ounce cans. However, larger vehicles and those equipped with rear air conditioning systems may require different amounts. Always consult your owner's manual or manufacturer specifications to avoid overfilling the system.

Can I leave my car running when adding Freon?

Yes. It is generally recommended to have the engine running while recharging your vehicle's air conditioning system. The AC compressor is powered by the engine and must be operating to circulate refrigerant properly and ensure an effective recharge.

Why is my car blowing hot air after adding Freon?

A refrigerant leak can cause a loss of pressure within the AC system, preventing it from producing cold air. This is one of the most common reasons a recharge may not solve the problem. The system should be inspected for leaks and any damaged components should be repaired before additional refrigerant is added.
